     from the GGMG president...

When I  was asked to be the GGMG president, I was very reluctant because the organization is so large and, since I have been a member, it has had some spectacular presidents. Then I realized that the organization itself is so spectacular that the president doesn’t have to be.

We all have in common an interest in gardening, but we bring to the organization many different talents and knowledge bases. The current Executive Committee, for instance, has members who are or have been a school principal, a bookkeeper, a human resources officer, a science professor, an editor, and a high school English teacher. The rest of the board is even more varied; and the total membership, broader still; but we are all united in our desire to learn more and to share our knowledge and varied talents.

This organization accomplishes great things: we present an annual symposium that has been called “the best of its kind”; we raise a substantial sum by sharing our plants with the public each spring; we contribute to and maintain four community gardens; we award monetary grants to deserving groups and individuals; we share gardening information with the public by telephone and in person. Along the way we perform additional tasks requested by various community groups, and we accomplish these tasks by many of us each doing a small portion.

I am honored to do my small portion as president this year. Thank you for the opportunity!

Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.

                                            - Jean Lindsey
