The Garden is full of culinary, medicinal and fragrant herbs... |
Plums - ready for harvesting. |
Soy beans - ready for harvesting. |
The crowing of the barnyard rooster, the smoky smells of a wood fire from the one room school house and a garden in its full glory - these sights, scents and sounds welcome gardeners who volunteer at the Living History Farm gardens at Roper Mountain Science Center (RMSC).
Under the auspices of the Greenville County School District, the RMSC has served as a learning environment for school children for more than 20 years. In October, 2003, the Center added two more gardens - in addition to the Butterfly Garden - as volunteer opportunities in partnership with the Greater Greenville Master Gardeners.
The Herb Garden and the Field Garden offer hands on learning, mostly due to Helen Ellis, volunteer director of this garden. Ellis has worked for decades creating and nurturing the Field Garden. Master Gardener candidates, as well as veterans, work in these gardens under Ellis' guidance and direction.
The herb and field gardens in the Living History Farm at Roper Mountain Science Center await your ideas, nurture and love. For more information contact: Evelyn Onofrio 244-1767 (evelyn2@charter.net) or Lorrie Provost at 288-3279.
The phone at the living History Farm volunteer cabin is 281-1188 ext 7904. Leave a message, it is usually not manned.
